Why civilizations rise, forget, and begin again, and what the flood myths were really trying to tell us.
Every 13,000 years or so, civilization appears to hit a reset. The proposed cause isn't war or famine, it's geomagnetic. Earth's magnetosphere, the field that deflects solar radiation, periodically weakens to a fraction of its normal strength.
With that shield down, the planet is exposed to solar activity for what could be thousands of years at a stretch, long enough to reshape climate, coastlines, and whatever civilization was standing when it started.
Some civilizations saw it coming. The response was twofold: physical refuge, elaborate underground structures built to outlast the surface conditions, and something less literal, a kind of inner preparation described as strengthening one's own spiritual structure.
Knowledge of the cycle itself rarely survives intact. Instead, it comes down to us encoded, carried inside the flood stories nearly every culture on Earth happens to tell.
The conventional explanation says the reset is earned: civilization drifts out of moral and spiritual alignment, calcifies, normalizes violence and control, and nature eventually corrects it. Cataclysm as consequence.
"What ends up happening is that society begins to calcify, it goes into lower and lower states of consciousness. You'll be able to see the clear signs of a de-evolving civilization."
It's a clean story. It's also worth questioning, because it requires believing there was ever a "good old days" to fall from, and asking honestly who that golden age would have actually served.
There's another way to read the same evidence, one that runs in the opposite direction entirely.
Humanity begins connected and spiritually intact, then drifts into domination, greed, and disconnection, until the world becomes evil enough to warrant being wiped clean.
Humanity begins in survival-driven, egocentric consciousness, a reasonable starting point after a prior cataclysm, and evolves upward, generation by generation, toward higher awareness. The reset arrives not as punishment, but right as the pieces are finally coming together.
Both readings agree on one strange detail: as things visibly fall apart, rising conflict, rising extremes, a parallel current runs the other way. People begin waking up en masse, in greater numbers than before.
The shift isn't from freedom into slavery. It's the reverse: long-normalized exploitation starts surfacing into collective awareness, becoming visible and nameable for the first time, and that visibility is itself what moves consciousness upward, from self-interest, to tribe, to something closer to universal.
Even this framework deserves scrutiny. If abusive power is the pattern that keeps recurring throughout the cycle, it's worth asking whether the tidy version of the "reset" story, the one that blames the fallen for their own fall, might itself be a piece of the very control system it claims to describe.
